Kawkawlin Township halts DTE wind turbine proposal

There’s now a 120 day moratorium in place in Bay County’s Kawkawlin Township stopping special use and construction permits for wind turbines being proposed by D-T-E Energy. That followed a 3-1 vote by township leaders during a Board of Trustees meeting Monday, July 9. Supervisor Dennis Bragiel added about 150 people came to the Township Hall to voice their concerns. Many were strongly opposed to D-T-E’s plans based on factors including health issues tied to noise and shadow flicker. It’s likely Township Planning Commissioners will review the current ordinance soon to see what if any changes need to be made.

Bay County Register of Deeds Brandon Krause was among those in attendance. Krause says there’s lots of concern among residents over putting those turbines too close to populated areas.

“They’re not against renewable energy, they’re for renewable energy. It’s just these are not put in place in townships that are as large as what we have around here. They’re more suited for townships with about 800 people.”

The moratorium follows on the heels of a similar moratorium put in place in Monitor Township on June 25.
