Developer cancels weather tower permit

A permit to erect a meteorological tower on land in the St. Lina area has since been cancelled, with no word if the company behind the permit is still considering the area as a potential site of a wind energy project.

Tanya Dubeau, who had filed an appeal to the permit, said she received a call June 18 from the County of St. Paul informing her the permit has since been cancelled and so it was no longer necessary to appeal.

“Yes, the developer who planned to put in the meteorological tower has decided against the development and had us cancel the permit,” CAO Sheila Kitz confirmed to the Journal on Friday.

Tanya and Real Dubeau operate a 3,000-colony honeybee operation in the St. Lina area and appealed the permit out of concern wind turbines could potentially impact their livelihood. Tanya said she was relieved by the permit’s cancellation but will be vigilant as to any possible similar developments in the future.

NextEra Energy Resources did not respond to the Journal’s request for information as to whether or not they have any further interest in this region for developing a wind energy project.
