Uninamous vote puts hold on wind turbine projects in Monitor Township

Hundreds packed the Monitor Township Hall on Monday evening for a chance to voice their opposition to a wind turbine farm development that is now on hold.

After listening to two and a half hours of public outcry, the board voted unanimously to approve a moratorium on wind turbines. The move halts any new projects until an amended ordinance has been adopted.

Many residents also voiced frustration with the board in regards to the way the entire matter has been handled.

Michael Sage, DTE Energy’s program manager for the the development of wind and solar, said the company has secured 29,000 acres of land with 300 people.

“We’re at the very early stages of any development effort here in your township,” he said. “We are more than happy to be open with your board, with your elected officials, as well as the residents.”

The township supervisor, however was quick to point out that not all of those farmers actually live in the township.

The planning commission will now rework the ordinance.

The version they had recommended did not go over well, and the original ordinance dates back to 2009.
