Residents voice concerns on proposed wind farm in Clay and Montague counties

Wind farm companies have been looking to Clay and Montague counties for quite some time.

Clay County Against Wind Farm representative, John Greer, told us, “The problem with it is, it’s an unregulated industry and they can get going leasing with nobody knowing about them, which is actually what they’ve been doing. this is probably been going on for a year and a half or so unbeknownst to a lot of people.”

Like many in the room, Greer is a native of Clay County.

He continued to tell us, “My children are six generation owners of our ranch so this is something that’s near and dear to our hearts and a lot of people around here, this is the largest asset that they own and if you don’t think these people are going to stand up and fight to protect what’s theirs, they need to think again.”

He is not the only one who feels that way, over one hundred people came out to show their opposition.

Clay County and Montague County Against Wind Farm member, George Clay said, ”I believe that these hundred plus wind towers that they are proposing are going to fundamentally change this community permanently for generations to come.”

He said the farm will also negatively impact land values.

Greer added that the hope is to fight off this company just as they did in Bluegrove and Byers.

“We fought them for a couple of years and actually engaged Wichita Falls and Sheppard Air Force Base to come down and help the fight,” Greer told us.

But not everyone is ready to stage that fight this time around.

Clay County resident, Rooder Brite said, “Once you get use to it, there’s no good argument not to bring this thing in.”

Brite also said the farm could produce a windfall affect. “The big deal is the people that have them are very happy with them and the more people you get involved in this, the more economic base it would bring to these people, that may turn things over for the community a number of times.”

When it comes to the tax break, that some say could entice the company to start construction, that’s now in the hands of the Bellevue ISD board.

If board members approve the tax break, it could be a few months before residents see wind towers dotting the landscape.
