Wind turbine ordinance adopted in Bay County’s Beaver Township

After several months of debate, trustees in Bay County’s Beaver Township approved a wind turbine ordinance Monday which backers say protects residents’ health and safety.

Four trustees voted for the proposal with one abstaining.

Township trustee Nick Tomczak explained ordinance standards go far beyond guidelines set by the state and suggested by utilities like DTE Energy for things like setbacks and lighting.

DTE responded that the ordinance makes it virtually impossible for them to include Beaver Township as part of a planned wind farm network encompassing several neighboring townships.

About 80 people attended the board meeting held at the fire station next to the Township Hall on Garfield Road with chairs set up to accommodate the crowd.
