Hopkinton board passes town wind farm law

Hopkinton’s town board said “yes” Thursday night to a new law that regulates wind turbine projects.

The law passed 4 to 0. Town council member Gilbert Sochia was absent for last night’s vote.

The new law says wind turbines will have to stay 2,500 feet away from a neighbor’s property line.

There’s also a noise limit and it restricts the turbines to areas north of State Route 72.

A spokesperson for Avangrid Renewables, the company that wants to build a wind farm in Hopkinton, has said the law is unreasonable and has no safety benefits.

The town board failed to approve the law when it voted earlier this month.

The April 16 vote was split 2 to 2.

Avangrid’s proposed project would include 27 wind turbines.
