VELVA – A new wind project is coming to southwestern McHenry County.

Capital Power, based in Edmonton, Alberta, is developing and will operate the New Frontier Wind project in McHenry County, said Mike Sheehan, manager of media relations for Capital Power.

He said this is Capital Power’s second wind development project in the U.S. since last year. The earlier project is in Kansas. Capital Power has 24 such facilities in the U.S. and Canada, Sheehan said.

The McHenry County project, a 99-megawatt facility, will be located on about 10,700 acres of privately-owned lands and will have 29 Vestas V126 3.45 megawatt wind turbines, according to Capital Power’s website. A transmission line will connect to GRE’s McHenry Substation.

McHenry County officials said the wind farm project is being built in Bjornson and Brown townships south of Velva and in extreme southwest McHenry County. Removal of trees is being done to make way for the project.

Blattner Energy is constructing the wind project, Sheehan said.

The wind farm is expected to begin commercial operation in December, company officials said.
