L’ANSE – The Baraga County Board received a presentation from Wayne Abba, representing Friends of the Huron Mountains, regarding the proposed Summit Lake Wind Project.

The presentation attracted a large crowd of almost 50 people, with many addressing their concerns about the wind project and what it will do to the area.

Abba said the group is not against development – it just wants to know why this is a good area, and it wants what’s best for the land and wildlife.

“Consequences of this decision will permanently alter the environment up here, and we think that it deserves the most careful possible delivery,” said Abba.

Concerns addressed include whether RES will sell the project once it is built and also raised issues of jobs, roads, taxes and bonds.

Treasurer Anne Koski explained the tax and millage estimates, in an attempt to answer questions. She suggested that people come to these meetings and ask questions to understand.

Mike Koskinen assured community members that the County Board has “absolutely nothing” to say about the project. It is solely the L’Anse Township’s decision, he insisted.

“This board has no power, no jurisdiction, no nothing,” said Koskinen.
