Pulaski County residents voice opposition for wind turbines

Several Pulaski County residents attended the Pulaski County Board of Zoning Appeals and Pulaski County Advisory Plan Commission meetings Monday night to voice opposition toward the development of wind turbines in the area.

The plan commission may consider amendments to the current ordinance that would increase the setback requirement and outline a height requirement of wind turbines. No decisions were made Monday night by either board. The members accepted public comment in an orderly fashion.

The topic of wind turbines can bring out passionate opinions. The overwhelming consensus is that they are not wanted in Pulaski County.

Some landowners have been approached by members of wind energy systems in order to get farmers to lease their land for the construction of the wind turbines, but landowners aren’t buying into what they’re calling “empty promises”.

The board and commission members were urged to get as much information as possible. Decibel levels, environmental and nature concerns, aesthetics, and safety were the main points audience members brought to the conversation. The cost to decommission a wind turbine was also an issue that residents discussed Monday night.

The Pulaski County Plan Commission members plan to do their due diligence in making an informed decision, but public input weighs heavily in the process. Residents are urged to attend meetings to keep up on the topic and relay opinions as discussions move forward.
