Hanover departments respond to fire at wind turbine

The Hanover fire and highway departments responded to a report of smoke coming from the wind turbine on Pond Street Friday morning.

Hanover Deputy Fire Chief Jason Cavallaro reported smoke coming from the wind turbine at 11:47 a.m. on Friday, March 9. Three fire vehicles were called to the scene, according to Hanover Fire Chief Jeffrey Blanchard. The National Grid power company and the turbine’s maintenance workers were called to the scene.

“We determined that it was an electrical issue coming from the water treatment plant below the turbine,” said Blanchard. “We noticed a smoke odor in the plant and we were able to isolate the power going to the plant and worked with the DPW to remove the power going to there.”

The workers were able to use a fire extinguisher on the equipment inside, according to Blanchard. The turbine’s tower acted essentially as a chimney from the treatment plant below.

The responders were able to extinguish the fire within 15 minutes of arriving on the scene.

As of 4 p.m. on Friday, the town is working to restore power to the plant and what caused the fire is unknown at that time, according to Blachard.

This is the first time a fire has taken place at the turbine, he said.
