In reference to recent opinion pieces about the North Ridge Wind Farm project, I would like to clarify some of the concerns regarding the effect of wind turbine development on water resources.
The main problem with installing hundreds of yards of concrete to make the base for one tower is that it certainly will change the surface water flow in that area. The blasting required to install wind turbines on bedrock, especially important south of Route 72 in Hopkinton, will fracture the layers of rock and can certainly redirect the groundwater beneath.
On our road in Parishville, two neighbors lost their shallow wells when a third drilled a deeper well. Water quality can also be impacted by many other human activities. That is why property owners do not have the right to do whatever they want with their property, especially something that is going to negatively impact others.
In regard to the “emotional opinions concerning a valued topic in our area,” some of us greatly value clean, safe, abundant water. The reference to Cape Town indicates how serious it is when water resources are not protected and disappear.
Woods, water, and wildlife are our treasures here in the North Country. Yes! We get emotional when they are threatened by industrial development. And yes, we get emotional when our health and the right to the quiet enjoyment of our homes are threatened. Some things are more important than money. I believe a majority would agree.
