A coalition of environmental and other groups has formed to continue local opposition to the Lighthouse Wind project near the Lake Ontario shore in Somerset and Yates.
The formation of the POWER Coalition – Protecting Ontario’s Waterfront, Environment and Resources – was announced last week.
It includes the Niagara USA Chamber, the main Niagara County business organization, and Save Ontario Shores, the local citizen group battling the wind turbine plan.
Apex Clean Energy of Charlottesville, Va., has proposed erecting as many as 70 wind turbines, each up to 620 feet tall including the length of the propeller blades.
Other members include the American Bird Conservancy, the New York State Ornithological Association and the Hawk Migration Association of North America, whose members fear the spinning blades would kill migratory birds.
