Columnist didn’t go very far for her facts

The Maui News | Feb 16, 2018 | www.mauinews.com

Syndicated columnist Froma Harrop didn’t go very far for her facts and figures (“Clean energy and dollars are both green, so why tax the wind?” Feb. 8). She tapped a couple of Google sentences and made an article that feels good but was woefully incomplete.

Norwegians buy a large percentage of electric vehicles because those cars are subsidized and the others have a huge tax placed on them. Not only are the electrics subsidized but run on, oh my gosh, hydroelectric power and, oh my gosh, Norway has a huge slush fund from the sale of an abundance of natural gas and oil to the rest of the world.

One wonders, could you build a hydroelectric dam with windmills and solar panels? One wonders, could the ships that deliver the oil and gas around the world run on solar power and windmills? Does anyone believe the train system that consumes enormous amount of electric power can run on solar power or wind power?

It all looks good until you dig into the real facts and then it’s just one big myth that feels good, looks good, but doesn’t build roads and buildings and transport the food we need to live on.
