While wind farms are expected to bring great economic benefits to the south-west, Melissa Ware says they have only brought health and economic problems for her.

Ms Ware said she had been medically advised to leave her Cape Bridgewater home because of the impacts from the Cape Bridgewater wind farm, which has a wind turbine only 550 metres from her back fence.

Ms Ware said the wind farm disturbed her sleep and caused her to suffer high blood pressure, headaches and nausea.

Her husband and son had also suffered adverse health effects, she said.

Ms Ware said her health problems had led her to move to Geelong and limit her time at the Cape Bridgewater property to maintenance visits.

She takes issue with Member for Western Victoria James Purcell’s proposal that neighbours bordering wind farms should be financially compensated for their noise and visual impact.

She said Mr Purcell’s proposal would not change any of the noise and vibration issues that had forced her to leave her house.

Ms Ware said she had raised her case with the National Wind Farm Commissioner Andrew Dyer to try to effect changes that would allow her to return to her house rather than to get any compensation. However her case had been closed without any redress, she said.

Ms Ware believes she had been ‘noise sensitised” to a “turbine signature sound,” a sound that people cannot hear but impacts some people such as herself.

She said the acoustic studies done by wind farms and government planning departments did not cover the turbine signature sound that she believed was causing problems.
