Wind projects take hold

Resistance to the establishment of area wind farms has seemingly dissipated to a degree. Several communities targeted as prospective sites have eased restrictions.

Following contentious elections surrounding the wind farm issue in Fremont, Hornellsville and Hartsville in particular have seen pro-wind candidates take office, resulting in the advancement of proposals. In Hartsville, incumbent Supervisor John Bowles retained his seat despite a heated battle in November.

In Fremont, height restrictions, setbacks, noise limitations for lease signers and expanded construction work hours were all implemented to ease the process.

Large scale wind farm projects are already in operation in Cohocton and Howard in Steuben County.

Several communities have been negotiating with EverPower, a company seeking to locate turbines around the area in the near future.

The promise of increased annual revenues for municipalities and tax relief for property owners has seemingly brought the winds of change to valleys across the region. Will 2018 be the year that turbines get planted in these formerly contested communities?
