What to watch locally in 2018: West Fork Wind Farm

By James Sprague | Connersville News Examiner | Dec 31, 2017 | www.newsexaminer.com

It’s been years in the making, and 2018 marks an important year for the proposed West Fork Wind Farm project in northwestern Fayette County.

Since the approval of a tax abatement and the zoning variances back in 2015, and the extension of the tax abatement back in 2016, the song has remained the same for NextEra Energy Resources and its proposed three-county wind farm – they need a purchaser for the energy which would be produced.

Will 2018 finally see that purchaser materialize? Or will the energy company find itself back in front of county officials later this year, seeking an extension of the tax abatement past its current 2019 date and into the future?

The coming year will also likely see resolutions, of one sort or another, regarding two civil suits involving the West Fork Wind Energy Center and the Rush County Board of Zoning Appeals, due to the Rush County BZA denying special exception applications from NextEra for both wind turbines and electrical transmission lines in Rush County as part of the West Fork Wind Energy Center.

What impact will the results of those civil cases have on the West Fork Wind Energy Center project and its future in Rush, Fayette and Henry counties? That could very well be answered this coming year.
