Cobden airstrip rally draws big crowd

Everard Himmelreich | The Standard | December 16, 2017 | www.standard.net.au

Up to 200 people and about 35 light aircraft converged on Cobden airstrip on Saturday in a big protest against plans to build wind turbines near the airstrip.

The big turnout for the ‘Save Our Strip’ rally gave added impetus to the Cobden Aero Club’s efforts to stop Alinta Energy’s plans for a wind farm that would include four 180-metre high wind turbines only 2.5 kilometres from the airstrip’s northern end.

Community members are concerned the turbines would confine aircraft movement at the airstrip to one way, which in unfavourable weather, could restrict access by aircraft including emergency services such as fixed wing air ambulances and water bombers.
