Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is being urged to intervene urgently to stop the desecration of Australian war graves in France by a company that plans to build wind farms on the WWI battlefield at Bullecourt.
The two battles at Bullecourt 100 years ago cost Australia at least 10,000 casualties and the bodies of many of the fallen were never recovered.
Others were found and buried but their names remain unknown.
Sky News Contributor Campbell Newman’s great-uncle is among the fallen on the battlefield at Bullecourt.
‘It’s like they’ve gone to a Lone Pine cemetery at Gallipoli and dug a trench across it and put a wind farm up.’ Mr Newman said.
‘That’s what’s going to happen here.’
‘It is an outrage.’
Mr Newman says if France approves the development of the wind farm seven towers will be build on the battlefield, including work that will involve digging for foundations, transition tunnels and other earth works.
He is among those urging the prime minister to take the issue up with France.
‘I would like him to take it up directly with the French president,’ he said.
‘That’s how serious this is, that’s how important this is.’
