Wind farm under study

Apex Clean Energy is evaluating the feasibility of developing a wind energy project in Wise County, according to company Development Manager Charlie Johnson.

BP and Dominion Energy considered the Mill Creek site, which is on Black Mountain, near Roda, for a wind farm in the late 2000s. Apex is using meteorological stations to gather weather data and other tools to decide if the site is viable as well as where to place potential wind turbines.

“Because it is so early, many project details are yet to be determined,” Johnson said. “That said, based on other wind farms, Mill Creek could potentially create hundreds of jobs during construction and up to 15 long-term operations and maintenance positions. The project would also create a new revenue source benefiting schools, first responders and localities.”

The Mill Creek site is a few miles from the former Bullitt mine, which is under study for a possible pumped storage hydroelectricity facility.

Apex, based in Charlottesville, Va., has built several dozen wind projects throughout the country. Frequently, the company maintains partial ownership and/or management of the projects.
