Invenergy dismisses tax appeals for wind development

BAD AXE – On Oct. 6, the Michigan Tax Tribunal entered a final order of dismissal of all of Invenergy’s wind tax appeals against Bethany and Lafayette Townships in Gratiot County. These cases involve the Gratiot County Wind Park. The dismissal covers 46 wind turbines in the development.

Spokesperson for Invenergy, Tom Izzo stated, “In the interest of maintaining a cordial and mutually productive relationship with the communities and officials within Bethany and Lafayette townships, Invenergy has decided to withdraw its pending appeal with no change in the previously assessed 2016 and 2017 values.”

“The members of the Michigan Renewable Energy Collaborative (MREC) would like to recognize the professionalism of Invenergy staff and its tax appeal representative in their work on this topic,” stated MREC Coordinator Carl Osentoski. “They indicated that they wanted to maintain a good working relationship with their host communities, which we greatly appreciate.”

“I would like to also express my appreciation to the members of MREC who have supported our work and positions as we moved through the difficult and complicated tax appeal process. By working together, we have been able to demonstrate a resolve that individually we would not have been able to,” Osentoski also stated.

The release also stated, the coordinated efforts of Clark Hill, Appraisal Economics and our local township assessors, supervisors and trustees have led the local responses to the hundreds of tax appeals that have challenged MREC’s positions on taxes and property valuations. There are pending tax appeals involving eight wind parks before the Michigan Tax Tribunal. All the remaining cases are with DTE and Consumers Energy.
