Dr. Woodwell’s message (“Restoring The Turbines” letter, September 29 Enterprise) conflicts with the best interests of Falmouth and, indeed, the will of our community as set forth in zoning bylaws adopted by Falmouth Town Meetings.
Dr. Woodwell deserves rightful credit for his pioneering science associated with climate change and for efforts championing transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. However, local steps toward developing renewable energy strategies should not be undertaken if they fail to deliver one of the most vital outcomes. A clear and predictable standard of protection for neighboring residents. Steps, in this particular case, that comply with the community’s land use practices and policies. Lest we not forget, these wind turbines and the nuisance they caused were the very catalyst for Town Meeting’s logic to adopt a more restrictive Wind Energy System Bylaw (2013).
“Tilting at Windmills” is a phrase used to evoke a sense of confrontation when the adversary is incorrectly perceived. Dr. Woodwell’s idealistic justification for “reconsideration” compromises both the community’s wind turbine vision and Falmouth’s affirmation to “move on” and learn from this unfortunate mistake.
