After nine month of discussion, the Town of Tonawanda Planning Board decided Wednesday to forward new wind turbine and cell tower codes to the Town Board for its approval.

Although both codes are separate, each addresses some of the same issues of changing technology and aesthetics, such as height and location.

“We’ve spent an awful lot of time on this,” Chairman Kenneth Swanekamp said to his fellow Planning Board members.

The code would ban large industrial turbines used on wind farms and the use of wind turbines in residential areas.

Swanekamp said the cell tower code would promote co-location and protect residential areas.

The cell tower code also deals with incorporating micro cell technology into existing infrastructure, such as co-locations on telephone poles.
