Hwy 14 re-opens, inspections pending

The Highway 14 underpass in Aurora re-opened for traffic Friday nearly three weeks after sustaining damage when a wind turbine component being transported by truck hit the bridge structure Sept. 11.
Details of the extent of that damage have not been released, though Burlington Northern Santa Fe officials advised local authorities that the road was safe to travel pending further inspections. Though the underpass was re-opened as of Friday, BNSF announced that it will be closed for approximately three hours each Tuesday in October beginning this week. The plan is to close to the roadway at 10 a.m., then move the signs and barricades away allowing traffic to flow by early afternoon. See print or e-editions for details.
