Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization opposes wind power projects

The Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization is opposing eight proposed wind power projects, saying they “will have a negative impact on Fort Drum and threaten its future.”

The FDRLO, which advocates for the protection and enhancement of Fort Drum, issued a position statement Tuesday.

“We strongly oppose the eight industrial wind projects, as they will greatly reduce the installation’s training capability and thereby diminish the 10th Mountain Division’s readiness,” the statement read.

According to the statement, existing wind turbines in Lewis County and on Wolfe Island in Canada already distort radar at Fort Drum’s Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield. This negatively affects “safe flight operations for helicopter and fixed wing aircraft.”

The FDRLO also said the turbines affect the accuracy of weather data taken by Doppler radar in Montague.

“This is not an issue of renewable energy policy, but rather an issue affecting military readiness today, and Fort Drum’s relevance for future new training missions tomorrow. This is an issue of national security,” the statement said.

The position statement comes days after north country Assemblywoman Addie Jenne took a stand against wind power projects around Fort Drum.

The assemblywoman said she plans to introduce legislation that would prevent wind turbine installations around the post from receiving state subsidies.
