VEC opposing new large-scale renewable projects

Vermont Electric Cooperative is opposing the addition of any new energy generation projects in the northern part of the state larger than rooftop or backyard solar projects.
The Caledonian Record reports the opposition is in place until the state, utilities and grid operators can lift constraints that exist on the grid serving northern Vermont and already built renewable projects like 21 wind turbines in Lowell.
Christine Hallquist, co-op CEO, said it’s been “very careful” about locating its own community solar projects outside the constrained area between Highgate and Sheffield.
Constraints exist on the Lowell project, owned by Green Mountain Power that sells electricity at cost to VEC. The area also includes new energy projects.
The VEC is opposing a single 2.2-megawatt wind turbine planned for Dairy Air Farm in Holland; Green Mountain Power is intervening.
