Group speaks out against wind project

A group called River Residents Against Turbines is speaking out about a project in Jefferson County.

The group held an informational meeting in Clayton Tuesday night about the Horse Creek wind project.

The wind farm would have up to 72 wind turbines in the towns of Brownville, Clayton, Lyme and Orleans.

Members say the project would decrease home values, pose issues to Fort Drum and Watertown International Airport and create economic and tourism risks to the region.

“The number one job is tourism, people come here for the beautiful scenery,” River RATs member Cindy Grant said. “Even New York state has recognized that the Thousand Islands is a beautiful tourist destination. Why would we destroy what we have here for industrial wind turbines?”

We reached out to the wind developer, Avangrid Renewables. Its website says the project would create jobs and increase revenue to tax bases.
