MHI Vestas prototype catches fire

Cause uncertain; Osterild machine 'allowed to burn itself out' | 05/08/2017 | renews.biz

An MHI Vestas V164 turbine has caught fire at the Osterild test centre in west Jutland, Denmark.

Few details are available on the cause or the extent of damage from the incident. No one was hurt during the blaze.

MHI Vestas said: “We are grateful that no one was injured. The fire brigade was called immediately and secured the area around the turbine. As soon as possible, and once it is safe to do so, we will begin investigating the cause of the fire.”

The spokesman added: “The incident will not affect our construction and installation timetables.”

According to site owner DTU, the test platform was hosting the offshore wind supplier’s 9.5MW offshore wind prototype.

Emergency services allowed the fire atop the 222-metre machine to burn itself out, according to local media. Video posted on social media showed a large amount of black smoke billowing from the machine.

MHI Vestas has been testing the V164 at Osterild for some time. The fire was reported at 20.22 local time on Friday.

The 8MW version of the V164 is deployed near Esbjerg, Denmark, and at Dong Enegy’s operational 258MW Burbo Bank 2 offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
