Expert warns of adverse health effects from turbines

A world renowned researcher into the health impacts of infrasound and low frequency noise has urged the people of Broughderg to “leave their homes” if a major wind farm in the area goes ahead.

Dr Marian Alves-Pereira, a professor at Lusfona University in Lisbon, made the stark warning at a public meeting on the issue which was attended by over 200 people in the local community centre on Monday evening.

The event was organised by the Broughderg Community Association in conjunction with the campaign group, West Tyrone Against Wind Turbines.

Local people are involved in a campaign against plans by the wind energy giant, SSE Energy, to erect 33 wind turbines on mountains nearby at Doraville. The £150 million project would be the largest wind farms in the North if it gets the go-ahead.

Dr Alves-Pereira described the impact of infrasound and low frequency noise caused by wind turbines as an important public health issue which demanded urgent action and more research.

She said that the onset of health problems associated with wind farms could be gradual and could be particularly quick for those experiencing low frequency noise both at home and at work.

“The illnesses that can be contracted from the low frequency noise can include cardiovascular disease, it can affect your immune system, and one of the worst effects is late-onset epilepsy. The neurological damage can lead to psychiatric concerns and suicide.

“If you’re experiencing issues following the building of wind turbines near your home then take a holiday and notice the difference.”
