San Patricio County is one step closer to the start date of a proposed wind farm that will include the western part of the county – specifically Mathis and a small area in Tynan.

Avangrid Renewables Development Officer Jason Du Terroil attended commissioners court on Monday to request a reinvestment zone for the project area which would allow the company to apply for tax abatements.

The 200- to 285-megawatt wind farm will feature between 80 and 115 wind turbines, with the bulk being in and around the Mathis area. Du Terroil also added that the company is working with Mathis and Skidmore-Tynan ISDs as the project lands in their school districts.

“Our current plan is to complete all of the development items including this one in the county over the next few months and then get project approval for our company then in September or October,” Du Terroil said. “We will then start procurement and the design process, and are looking to start construction in September of next year.

“That’s our current plan for the project.”

San Patricio County Public Information Officer Desiree Voth added that the company indicated that the new reinvestment zoning will lead to retention of employment, as well as bring additional economic development to the area.

County Com-missioners passed the order allowing for the company to move forward in their process as they gain traction on the project.
