Ferry crash evidences dangers of Cape Wind

The June 16 crash of the Iyanough ferry in rough weather, high seas and dense fog, with the ensuing injuries to 15 people, dramatically underscores why we must continue to fight to end Cape Wind’s lease in Nantucket Sound.
It is clear that sailors, fishermen and ferries face a steep enough challenge in the difficult waters of the Sound with its quickly changing weather. Now imagine 25 square miles of these waters covered with 130 massive wind turbines.
Steamship Authority leadership was among other outstanding voices – our Cape & Islands legislators, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, the Barnstable Municipal Airport and more – that recently appealed to the federal government to terminate Cape Wind’s lease. Let’s hope the feds listen.
We don’t need any additional challenges to the men and women who captain our ferries – the lifeline to and from Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
