Wind farm fire causes Teesside homes to lose power

Burning wind turbines cut off power to homes across Teesside last night.
Darlington and Durham Fire Brigade were called to Trimdon Wind Farm, near Trimdon Grange, County Durham at 5pm last night following reports of two of the four pylons on fire.
A spokesman confirmed that one fire crew from Wheatley Hill Fire Station was dispatched and extinguished the fires by 5.19pm.
He said: “Two transformers caused the fire and two pylons were on fire.”
Commissioned in October 2008, the farm consists of four 1.3MW turbines giving a total capacity of 5.2MW.
As a result of the fire, a number of properties across the TS21 (which includes Stillington , Elton and Thorpe Thewles ), TS29 and DH6 postcodes.
It is believed power was restored to all homes by 9.30pm.
Northern Powergrid were unable to confirm how many properties lost power.
