Wind farm proposal reaches agreement

After four years of discussions the Waverley wind farm will go ahead after Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi reached a mitigation agreement with Tararua Wind Power.

Chair Te Pahunga of Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, Marty Davis, said they have agreed to a package to help with their remaining concerns.

“This site was part of land confiscated by the government in the 1860s following the Taranaki land wars.

“The terms of the agreement allows Ngaa Rauru to have a voice by being a part of this development.”

General Manager of Renewable Development for Tilt Renewables, which owns Tararua Wind Power, Clayton Delmarter said they are looking forward to cementing a long-term relationship that brings sustainable benefits aligned with appropriate environmental and cultural values.

The mitigation package included input to management plans, and protection and translocation measures. Permanent access to the landlocked Waipipi block, a historically important hapuu village, has also been made possible.

The project will put up 48 wind turbines near Waverley.
