SEARSBURG— A Maine man was killed Tuesday after the crane he was driving struck a high-tension power line at a construction site, police said.

David Sprague, 59, of Windham, Maine, was operating a crane on a wind turbine construction site on Putnam Road in Searsburg around 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Vermont State Police.

As Sprague was driving under a series of high-tension power lines, the crane struck one of the lines. Police said Sprague was electrocuted and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sprague was working for Reed & Reed Inc., a construction company in Maine which has built a number of wind-power projects.

An autopsy will be performed by the state’s chief medical examiner.

Green Mountain Power responded immediately and quickly rendered the scene safe. State Police were assisted by the Wilmington Fire Department, Bennington Fire Department, Deerfield Valley Rescue Squad and Bennington Rescue Squad.
