Blowin’ in the wind

Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan | April 12, 2017 | www.yankton.net

Last August when Prevailing Winds (the wind project north of Avon) cancelled the meeting in Pierre to get a state permit, the organizers said they plan to better inform the community on the wind project.

They have not done what they promised. The Yankton Press & Dakotan did a news story of the major change Prevailing Winds has taken going from one large wind farm to 13 small farms. This eliminated two public meetings, and they can use a 1978 federal policy to force Basin Electric to buy the power.

The Prevailing Winds LLC Board of Governors are Ron Hornstra of Avon; Ronald Wagner of Tyndall; Erik Johnson of Avon; David Mogck of Tripp; Keith Thorstad of Chokio, Minnesota; Bruce Voit of Avon; Mark Rames of Olivet; and Paul Dummer of Lesterville. One thing these investors have in common is they don’t live in the area where the wind farm might be built.

The manager of Prevailing Winds is on record of saying if the wind farm is built it will split the Avon community. Avon has always been a community that works together. I want my 19 family members who live in the Avon area to enjoy a united community, not a split community. One hundred sixty mostly non-Avon residents have invested $2.5 million to split our community. Their only concern is personal financial enrichment.
