Corpus Christi City Council voted Tuesday to de-annex some 16 square miles on this city’s southside after approving an agreement that would stop windfarm development in that area for the next 25 years.

One more Council vote will make the decision final.

The vote came after Council members approved an agreement with Enbridge Energy, the company that purchased the Chapman Ranch windfarm project from Apex Energy. The agreement means the developer commits not to construct wind turbines taller than 100 feet within the boundaries of the previously annexed land.

A spokesman for the Chapman Ranch property owners said the group is pleased.

The agreement also gives the City the right to re-annex the property at any time in the future.
