Joyce Hindle: No more wind turbines at Salty Brine State Beach

I, for one, am hoping that the State of Rhode Island does not replace the collapsed wind turbine at Salty Brine State Beach (“Fierce wind topples turbine,” news, March 15).

It was a horrible addition to the area – very ugly and extremely noisy.

People go to the beach to rest, relax and listen to the waves breaking on the shore or to the horn from the Block Island Ferry. They do not go to hear the constant annoying whine from a wind turbine. Surely the cost in electricity savings was not worth the $2 million cost to put it up.

I remember Salty Brine and his wife sitting daily at “their” bench at the beach. He was always so pleasant when his “fans” said hello. Why is there no picture of him anywhere at the beach pavilion? The young people visiting Salty Brine State Beach today have no idea who he was.

Perhaps spending some money to put his picture up, with a short dedication (biography), would be a better way to spend the taxpayers’ money. It certainly would honor the memory of a man who meant so much to many generations of Rhode Islanders.
