Wind power generators handed $600 million in federal subsidies

Wind power generators received $600 million in federal subsidies last year, helping to drive an increase in electricity prices for consumers. Data collated by Australian Power Project, which advocates a sustainable national energy policy, showed $588.7m was paid to wind farm operators. Wind made up almost 75 per cent of all green power generated in a sector that was paid $790m to help reach a national renewable energy target of 23.5 per cent by 2020. Untrue renewable points

Every point made by Dirk de Vos and Nicole Loser for renewable energy and against “base load power” is not only wrong but the inverse of the truth (Need for base load power is a pro-Eskom fabrication, February 24). Eskom’s “opposition to renewables” is because of the simple fact that the renewable electricity it is forced to buy is ruinously expensive and horribly unreliable. Eskom’s half-year report, ending September 30 2016, shows it is compelled to buy bad wind and solar . . . Complete story »

Antrim: Tax credit on ballot

There are several notable items that will be discussed during Antrim’s Town Meeting, including a slight increase to its operating budget, a warrant article that would authorize the town to acquire a conservation easement on a parcel of land as part of Antrim Wind Energy’s nine-turbine proposal, a veterans tax credit, and an article that would express widespread solidarity with people fighting against the Dakota Access Pipeline. A contributing driver to the town’s operating-budget increase, is a rise in its . . . Complete story »

City learning to mitigate negatives of wind energy

It is so refreshing to see our community leaders beginning to apply common sense in their actions on “green energy,” as written about in Friday’s article on the Chapman Ranch Wind Farm development. We need our leaders to educate themselves on the facts about wind energy and to put forth the effort to address the harm that the equipment used to harness the energy can cause. Conventional electric generation facilities require a permitting process, a public hearing process, and then . . . Complete story »

Dayton administration pushes ambitious renewable energy mandate

"There is bipartisan opposition to increasing energy mandates in Minnesota," said Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, who chairs the House energy committee. "There's a lot of concern, particularly among rural legislators, about what an energy mandate is going to mean to reliability and cost," he said. "So going forward, I think it's more along the lines of achieving both cleaner and cheaper energy, not just one or the other." Complete story »

Bolts blamed for V112 collapse; Swedish probe followed Christmas 2015 failure at Lemnhult

Swedish officials have pointed to incorrect bolt installation as the root cause of a Vestas turbine collapse at the Lemnhult wind farm in late 2015. Government accident investigation authority SHK said the three-year-old V112 which failed on 24 December showed clear signs of fatigue and corrosion at the join between the bottom and second section of the tower. “The bolts that had held together the joint had suffered from a fatigue process and the bolts could no longer withstand the . . . Wind power is an attack on rural America

Urban voters may like the idea of using more wind and solar energy, but the push for large-scale renewables is creating land-use conflicts in rural regions from Maryland to California and Ontario to Loch Ness. Since 2015, more than 120 government entities in about two dozen states have moved to reject or restrict the land-devouring, subsidy-fueled sprawl of the wind industry. The backlash continued last month when a judge in Maryland ruled that the possible benefits of a proposed 17-turbine . . . Complete story »

OAG starts wind farm ‘collusion’ inquiry

The Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) has started an investigation into whether there was a conflict of interest between the private sector and state authorities in the land lease project for wind farm projects. Auditor-General Pisit Leelavachiropas said Sunday that the agency has been examining whether there were “conflicts of interest” in allocating Sor Por Kor land to private firms operating wind farms, when it was specifically supposed to go to landless farmers. The agency is looking into the actions . . . Complete story »

Environmental group appeals Gateway West line

BOISE – A Hailey, Idaho-based environmental organization has appealed the Bureau of Land Management’s approval of a high-voltage transmission line route through sage grouse habitat on public land and requested a halt of the start of construction. The Gateway West Transmission Line was jointly proposed by Rocky Mountain Power and Idaho Power and would span more than 1,000 miles from Glenrock, Wyo., to Melba, Idaho, including 850 miles of 500-killovolt line. Officials of Western Watersheds say the route they prefer, BLM’s . . . Complete story »

New York tries to balance solar power growth with land-use issues

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Hundreds of proposals for solar power developments are flooding into the state, offering the promise of an economic lifeline for struggling farmers and a dilemma for New York towns clinging tightly to their agricultural past. Farmers are being offered $1,000 to $3,000 per acre annually to lease land to solar companies answering Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s call to have the state rely more and more on renewables for its energy needs. The sun rush has led some towns . . . Complete story »
