Highlands windfarm map explained

By Calum Ross | The Press and Journal | February 13, 2017 | www.pressandjournal.co.uk

Our graphic is based on the most up-to-date digital maps provided by Highland Council.

It gives a snapshot of exactly how many multi-turbine windfarm developments are distributed across the north by mapping every planning application that has been lodged for the schemes.

Highland Council provide the information online in its role as the planning authority – with its latest maps based on the situation in the region in January.

The main map shows windfarm schemes which have already been constructed – as well as several indicated in green, which means the applications have been approved but they have yet to be built.

Meanwhile, developments which are still in the planning system and yet to be determined are also included in the map, as are the proposals which have been turned down, shown in red.

The council’s original map, also shown, even goes into the detail of the number of individual turbines scattered across the Highlands.
