Residents delight in decision against Ardglass windfarm

‘It was a David and Goliath situation, but we fought it fair and square’

Hundreds of residents opposed to the proposed Ardglass windfarm are this week celebrating the decision by An Bord Pleanála to overturn the planning permission previously granted by Cork County Council for a wind farm in their community.

Residents described their campaign against the windfarm, ongoing since 2012, as a ‘David and Goliath situation’.

Following a failed application for an 11-turbine windfarm in 2014, the developers made a second application in November 2015 for seven turbines with a tip height of 140 metres in Ardglass. While local residents opposed to the proposed development submitted 329 separate objections, Cork County Council granted conditional approval to the application.

This approval was subject to 52 conditions, most notably to deny permission to two of the seven proposed turbines.

This prompted an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, who this week returned with a decision to refuse permission for the windfarm, saying the proposed development would ‘seriously injure the visual amenities of the area’.
