Keep up the fight against Cape Wind

Cape Cod Times | Jan 1, 2017 | www.capecodtimes.com

It is dangerous to believe that the Cape Wind project, proposed just off our unspoiled beaches, is dead. In fact, the strategy Cape Wind is currently employing to reemerge from its defunct position was made clear in the recent article (“Changing landscape for renewable energy,” Dec. 25).

It’s this: Hold on to the long-term federal lease and wait for the right time to build a massive project in the middle of Nantucket Sound. The cost of offshore wind is dropping, and private investment in offshore wind is gaining in popularity. Projects other than Cape Wind with better and less conflicted sites are moving forward.

All this is to say – beware of Cape Wind. No doubt the hard-driving developer of this project is lying in wait for the right moment to cut a new deal, secure a new contract, or simply sell the lease to an out-of-state or even foreign wind energy developer. Cape Wind has far too many dollars and years invested to walk away now.

The bottom line? We must keep fighting Cape Wind. Great progress has been made towards stopping this behemoth project. Quitting now because we think it’s over would do nothing but play into the developer’s hands.
