Orleans Legislature supports bill limiting turbines near bases

ALBION – The Orleans County Legislature passed a resolution on Wednesday urging Congress to pass the legislation, “Protection of Military Airfields from Wind Turbine Encroachment Act.”

The bill would ensure that any new wind turbines located within a 40-mile radius of a military installation will be deemed ineligible for renewable energy tax credits. Removing support traditionally given to energy projects would discourage development.

Jim Simon, Yates supervisor, and John Riggi, Yates councilman, stood up during the public comment period, urging legislatures to support the bill.

Lynne Johnson, legislator of district 2, before moving the resolution said, “For us in Orleans County,(this resolution) means protection for the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station which generates a positive economic impact exceeding $200 million annually, and employs nearly 3,000 Western New Yorkers, many of which live right here in Orleans County. This legislature has long been committed to a policy of protecting the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, and the people who work there, from closure due to any future closure attempts by the government, and any other threats to its ongoing operation and future missions.”

The resolution passed unanimously.

In other news, the Orleans County Chamber of Commerce, Kendall’s Lion and Leo Clubs, the Kendall Community Innovation Advisory Committee, and Kendall student drivers forwarded a petition to the Orleans County Legislature asking for a speed reduction on Roosevelt Road (state Route 18) which currently has a 50 mph speed zone.
