Wind farm seeks to set up west of Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Ill. – A proposed Pike County wind farm could provide an economic boost in the area if approved.

A proposal for up to 26 wind turbines recently was submitted to the Pike County Board by Illinois Winds LLC. If approved, the majority of the turbines would be installed on private property west of Pittsfield.

“It could have a pretty good economic impact with construction and revenue to the landlords,” said Pike County Board Chairman Andy Borrowman. “With the construction, materials and manpower would be huge.”

Borrowman said he thinks public opinion will be mixed, as is common with wind farms.

Pike County Zoning Administrator Mark Mountain has been working for more than a year with Illinois Winds on ensuring the company adheres to the county’s ordinance.

“We will get this board’s new members up to speed, and the agriculture community will be highly involved,” Borrowman said. “We will move forward cautiously.”

Borrowman said a public hearing on the proposal will be held at a later date.
