Anti-wind turbine protest held in Gweedore

Donegal Now | Monday 12th of December 2016 | www.donegalnow.com

Dail deputy Thomas Pringle TD joined protesters over the weekend as they staged an anti-wind turbine demo at the Udaras na Gaeltachta regional offices in Gweedore.

Donegal County Cllr Micheal Choilm Mac Giolla Easpuig said he met with Udaras officials after the protest and “conveyed to them the strength of feeling about proposals” for wind turbines in the area.

Cllr Mac Giolla Easpuig added in a statement: “Gaoth Dobhair Independent deputy Thomas Pringle described the development as the ‘wrong development in the wrong place’ and called on Donegal County Council to refuse it permission.”

He continued: “’It was great to see so many people attend the protest on Friday and it shows the depth of feeling about this wind turbine development in the local community.

“We pointed out that this is the completely wrong development and on the wrong site.

“This site is too close to houses and local people should not have this type of development imposed on them.

“If Udaras wish to move to renewable energy as a selling point, they could be actively looking at biomass for heat for electricity generation rather than wind turbines.

“There is enough roof spacethat would accommodate many solar panels and they would not be imposing them on a community that does not want them.

“Solar panels would supply enough energy and be a marketing point to ‘green businesses’ that may wish to move to the area.”
