Both sides of the RES America wind farm debate crowded into the Lyon County Commission Chambers on Thursday, wondering whether the board would take action on the company’s zoning change request that could lead to the county’s first wind energy development if ultimately approved. That decision is still coming.

Commissioners voted 2-0 with Scott Briggs abstaining to essentially send the matter back to the Lyon County Planning Board, which had voted 6-1 last month to recommend the zoning change from agriculture to ag special use, wind energy conversion system – with two main conditions: a 1,640-foot turbine setback from any existing property lines and an extension request if the zoning change is approved but construction hasn’t started by the end of 2018.

Commission Chair Rollie Martin says the Planning Board needs to give further explanation about its setback recommendation. He also said Thursday’s discussion was a civil discourse in every sense of the word.
