Cassadaga Wind project to begin year-long review

The fate of a 126-megawatt wind farm proposed for Chautauqua County will be determined by a seven-member panel charged with evaluating the merits of new power generation projects.

The Cassadaga Wind project in the Town of Arkright is the first wind project to have its application accepted for review by the state’s siting board under its 2011 power plant siting law for projects with a generating capacity of at least 25 megawatts, the state Public Service Commission said.

That law gives the siting board – and not local governments – the authority to determine if a power plant gets built.

The siting board on Monday said it had determined that Cassadaga Wind’s application was complete, kicking off what is expected to be a 12-month review process for the project that will include a public hearing, possibly in early January, and an environmental review.

EverPower Wind Holdings is the project’s developer.
