Anti-turbine group invites Oosterhoff to AGM

SMITHVILLE—On Dec. 1, MPP Sam Oosterhoff is going to get a crash course in wind turbines.

The newly elected member of Provincial Parliament will be attending the West Lincoln Glanbrook Wind Action Group’s annual general meeting, where he will be briefed on the work the group has done this year in their fight against the proliferation of wind farms in the region, as well as their main concerns about the technology.

“I am attending this meeting mostly to get more context as to the issues surrounding wind turbines in West Lincoln,” said Oosterhoff, who is hoping to listen to the concerns of his constituents at the meeting.

“I understand there is a large amount of frustration with the manner in which the municipality was run rough-shod over by the provincial Liberal government, after West Lincoln had declared itself to be an “unwilling host” municipality,” he said.

Oosterhoff says wind turbines were unnecessary for Ontario’s energy supply and he believes they were implemented based on ideology, not practicality.

“I am eager to learn more about the impact of the wind turbines at this event, to help inform my policy decisions on this important issue,” he said.

Sidney Thompson and Ed Engel are part of the wind action group and say there needs to be an established bylaw to keep wind turbines from being placed at least 2 km from residences.

“Wind turbines have no place close to people’s homes,” said Thompson. “Everything we have done with the government has been dismissed.”

The pair hopes that the new MPP will listen to their concerns as well as the concerns of residents who plan on attending the meeting.

The meeting is to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Dec 1 at Covenant Christian School in Smithville.
