A wind turbine destroyed by a Nov. 10 fire on Bald Mountain in Bear Creek Township will be replaced, said Kelly Kimberly, spokeswoman for Dallas, Texas-based Leeward Renewable Energy, which owns the wind farm.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Bear Creek Township Fire Chief John Krumsky said.

Firefighters were not able to gain access to the wind turbine because of the amount of debris falling from it, he said.

“It wasn’t worth putting my guys in danger so it burned itself out,” Krumsky said.

The fire sent a thick cloud of black smoke billowing over parts of the Wyoming Valley.

Before the fire, there were 12 wind turbines, each 256 feet tall. The electricity generated powers 6,480 homes a year, Kimberly said.

She was not sure of the time frame for the wind turbine replacement.
