TUSCOLA COUNTY – Two Tuscola County townships will hold back-to-back special meetings at the Tuscola Tech Center, 1401 Cleaver Road, Caro, Tuesday on wind development projects in their townships.

In September, NextEra Energy Resources filed for special use permits in Almer, Ellington and Fairgrove townships to develop Tuscola III Wind Energy Center.

The proposed $200 million project is to build 52 turbines within those three townships.

The Ellington Township Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to connect with legal counsel, and to consider restrictions on wind development.

Then at 7 p.m., the Almer Charter Township Board will meet. The purpose of their meeting is also to consider hiring legal counsel, as well as to consider restrictions on wind development.

A faction in the township has opposed wind development. Some of those who have opposed wind developments are now members on those township boards.

NextEra currently has two wind farms in the county. The Tuscola-Bay Wind farm is primarily located in Gilford Township, with a few turbines in Bay County. It started operation in 2012. Tuscola Wind II is located in the townships of Gilford, Akron, Fairgrove and Juniata. It became operational in 2013.
