An investigation has been launched after a Siemens 2.37MW-108 SWT turbine collapsed at Pattern Energy’s 265MW Ocotillo wind farm in southern California.

The unit fell within the designated setback zone surrounding the turbine’s base and no one was injured by the fall on Monday, Pattern Energy said in a statement on the wind farm’s website.

“We are working closely with the turbine manufacturer, Siemens, to identify the root cause of the failure and a full investigation is currently underway,” the company said.

The relevant authorities have also been notified.

“Our first priority is the safety of our employees, contractors, neighbors and the environment,” Pattern said

“We are taking this issue very seriously and will communicate more information as it becomes available.”

Ocotillo comprises 112 Siemens turbines and has been fully operational since July 2013.

Electricity generated by the wind farm is sold to San Diego Gas & Electric under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
