Clinton Co. leaders look to discuss wind farm ordinance

Clinton County is in the process of bringing industrial wind turbines to the county, as wind farms have been a hot topic in Clinton County lately.

After much talk, county leaders are moving forward with the issue.

“We’ve had numerous, a lot of public comment. We’ve had to move the meetings to a larger venue, twice, met at the library one time just soliciting comments both pro and con,” said Mark Mills, Clinton County Area Plan Commission executive director.

For many years, Clinton County has had a wind farm ordinance on the books, allowing wind farms to be constructed. So far, the county has yet to have a farm, but that could soon change.

“The area plan commission appointed themselves to be the special committee to review it,” said Mills.

County commissioners directed the wind farm ordinance committee to take a look at the ordinance, making any necessary updates. After a vote last week, the committee made some changes.

Wind turbines are now required to be built at least 1,520 feet away from homes and can’t produce more than 45 sound decibels.

“We”re trying to find balance and that’s where we are, as of today,” Mills said.

A public meeting on the updated ordinance will be held at Clinton Central Elementary School at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21.
